This shall be accomplished with a team of professionals, both volunteer and career, by providing fire prevention, public education, emergency operations, and planning.

The Troy Fire Department provides various emergency services to the second largest State Equalized Value (SEV) district within the state of Michigan through a volunteer organization.

The department is led by Chief William Nelson, a 35-year veteran of the Troy Fire Department. Troy has six fire stations strategically located throughout the City. There are 14 career staff members and an authorized strength of 180 volunteer fire fighters. Fire fighters are highly trained and certified by the State of Michigan. They are on call twenty-four hours a day for emergencies involving extrications, fire, high-angle rescues, hazardous materials and other hazardous situations.

Troy Fire Department History

The Troy Fire Department was organized in 1940 by a group of businessmen and concerned citizens in what was known as Big Beaver, a small "Village" located at Big Beaver and Rochester Road. This group convinced the Township Board that a fire department was needed as well as a fire truck and other equipment (which were delivered March 1940). Prior to that, fire protection was supplied by the Clawson Fire Department. The Fire Department had 19 founding members and operated out of a "Ford" dealership and garage on Rochester Road, south of Big Beaver. In the mid-40's, a second fire fighting group was authorized in the area of Square Lake and Livernois at "Troy Corners." Over the last 50 years, the Fire Department has grown to 6 fire stations strategically located throughout the City. The Fire Department now has over 180 Volunteer Fire Fighters and 14 career employees. In 1940, Troy's first fire apparatus was a 1940 American LaFrance. Today, the fire department operates 9 class 'A' pumpers, 3 ladder trucks, 3 ladder pumpers, a 3 piece special rescue/hazardous material unit, 2 mobile air compressors, one grass fire truck, one reserve pumper, one training pumper, one Mobile Command Vehicle, and 16 staff vehicles.
